“A volcanic glaze is like life – it is unpredictable and you never know what is coming next.”
The work you see is produced with a combination of smooth and fine black clay with rough, glazed finishes. Many hours of testing volcanic glazes have enabled Karen to convey the textures and tactility of sand, cliffs and the sea. The glazing has allowed her to share the narrative of the Cornish coast, which has been added in layers of different degrees to give the idea of movement to the surface.
This work articulates a direction with a defined abstract result. Karen looks forward to developing forms and surface decoration further in the future.
