His great grandfather and great, great grandfather were both carpenters and cabinet makers. They made everything from furniture for luxury yachts to coffins! As a youngster Jon was introduced to wood turning by his uncle. He learnt to turn wood on his treadle powered, converted metal working lathe and was transported into a world of round objects.
Since picking up his chisels he has endeavoured to source materials as close as possible to his home. He finds that being able to turn wood that has grown, been felled, milled and seasoned nearby, incredibly rewarding.
Wood is inherently beautiful and, as a wood turner, it is Jon’s responsibility to enhance the beauty. The opportunity to do this best often comes from using wood that other craftsmen reject. Fissures, twisted and uneven grain, burrs and bark can be worked to create a truly unique piece of art.
